Hi this is my first tank ever and it’s been going well. I just got my first baby clown fish and i’m asking for knowledge and helpful tips on raising them. they’re on pellets and flake food at the moment and doing fine! they have unusual behavior and im worried they’re exhausting themselves against the current so i turned my wave maker off.

When you get clown and transport them they get very stressed so give them time

Congratulations on setting up your first tank and welcome to the hobby! Them swimming against the current is natural and they did the same in my tank for the first few weeks. I think it’s their way of acclimating to the tank and maybe just for fun too. If you see one being more aggressive or both clowns being sort of hostile that’s natural as the fish are establishing who will be dominant and turn into the female. If you see a clown shake and turn sideways that seems to be a sign of submission from the less dominant clown. Last thing- until they find a proper anemone or coral/spot they like, they’ll probably sleep against the back wall or something- totally normal. Best of luck and if you have any other questions I’d be happy to help!

thank you. so much helpful and reassuring information :) i’ve looked into getting them an anemone to start and help them feel better. i feel bad bc i just ran a test and my nitrites are spiking a little :( i have both api test kits and got them a monti coral and a leather and pulsing xenia too but my leather won’t open

Toadstool is probably acclimating to the tank, if you just got it they do something known as shedding, they stress shed and it’ll look a bit waxy, but once they’ve shed after a few days the toadstool will open up again. Just make sure the toadstool has enough flow to sluff off slime coat. 👍 I love my toadstool and it did that at first too

good to know thank you. i have a biocube 32 gallon with the lights it came with and this is my schedule 1: 11am-4pm = 5hours 2: 9:30am-4pm = 6&1/2hours 3: 7am-8pm = 11hours but i’ve come across an issue tonight. any ideas? every this is coated in brown spots

I don’t know if your light dim as the day goes or if it just maintains 100% intensity but I match the daylight with a 12 hour long light that ramps up in the morning and winds down at night. And assuming you just finished cycling and now are putting in fish I’d say those dots are the beginning of a diatom bloom. Diatoms come in new tanks and stick around for a few days to a week, then leave. Non toxic and won’t hurt corals. It’s Nothing to worry about. Also nice tank choice I was eyeballing that one too before I entered the hobby

yeah i can’t dim it unfortunately. what should i be monitoring now?

Since your tank is still brand new I’d still be testing ammonia and nitrite for a few weeks, along side a consistent testing of salinity, phosphate, nitrate, (understanding how much feeding is too much) ph and alkalinity. Since your corals are small and you don’t have many lps/sps, I’d say you can wait on testing calcium / magnesium for at least a couple weeks (water changes should replenish more than is being consumed by the sps/lps at this stage.
