Okay I need to use some GFO cuz my phosphates are a tad high and I’m getting a green hair algae outbreak. I asked deep dive to analyze my tank size (47 gal) and recent phosphate parameters test (0.2 ppm). it recommended I use 300g and that seems like an extremely high amount. I’m scared to crash my system. A BRS video says 1 Tbsp per 4 gallons and I’m thinking of even doing half that just to start gradually. Advice for GFO first timer?

What are the directions on the back? I also found when doing GFO that directions recommended way too much and my phosphates dropped too fast. .2ppm is not horrible. I’d start with 1/3 of what the packing recommends and you can always increase the amount based on testing after 24hrs

I bought it in bulk from LFS. I decided to go with just 3 tbsp. see where we land tomorrow.

Nice. Also if you have a valve on your reactor you can play with the speed. Faster the water is moving the more it will strip phosphates

Good call starting slow with the GFO, especially since your phosphate isn’t crazy high. I’ve always had better results running a small amount and swapping it out more often instead of dumping a bunch in at once. Just keep an eye on your alk and coral polyp extension when you start since

Whatever BRS says is what I do.

Well, if you’re phosphates are 0.02 you don’t have a phosphate issue. Recommended is somewhere between .03 and .1 with the optimum being between .05-.06
