This algae is killing me.

Been cleaning, scraping and doing weekly water changes.

Plus dosing microbacter 7.

I even did a cycle of micro-bacter clean.

Any ideas????

Maybe cut feeding a bit?

User Avatar @corythecoralguy 9h

Already done that too. Even done a blackout. Everything is growing, fish are happy. And about 10 CUC members not counting the cleaner shrimp and fire shrimp

Hard to say, maybe up the flow? Bad flow can cause algae issues. Also long light schedules on a newer tank can cause algae: Other than that not sure

2 powerheads, 8 hour light schedule. Tanks about a year old.

Hmm a year old tank should handle 8hrs no problem. Do you know your nitrate and phos levels?

User Avatar @corythecoralguy 8h

I knew that question was coming lol So I have a 200 gallon tank that I tested every weekend for a year. I was chasing parameters constantly. I stopped testing, stopped dosing, did weekly water changes and everything is growing amazing. That being said, I haven’t tested anything in this tank but I do water changes weekly, about 30%, so phosphates and nitrates should be low.

Okay I would test just so you actually have a reading. I’m no expert so idk what exact kind of algae that is either but I had a Dino outbreak that looked similar to what you have there when my water was to clean. I was like you doing 30% ish water changes when the next thing you know I had zero nitrate and zero phosphate. Worst pain in the rear so far in my reefing journey. The fix was letting the tank get dirtier actually and doing less water changes hahah. But that’s when I needed to start dosing now too

That tank gets reef roids once a month for the anemones, and I’m dosing 5 mils of microbacter a week.

I appreciate your input no matter what. That’s what reefing is all about.

No problem! it’s kind of a guessing game, and like you said it’s all part of it! Hahah here’s a picture when I had the outbreak. You can see if it looks similar or not. I fixed it by adding more flow, blackout schedule, less water changes, and feeding more. Without the numbers though not sure what direction you need. Just throwing out experiences

There’s a small part of the 200 gallon

User Avatar @corythecoralguy 8h

Your water is still super clear! My 200 gallon is always super clear but I have a carbon filter, socks and skimmer lol

I had to manually remove cyano while doing water changes. I cycled my tank with 1/4 of my rock being live, along with live sand and water from the reef display at my LFS. Tank was clear after "cycling" 3 months in. Maybe toss some live rock in your sump 🤷

User Avatar @corythecoralguy 8h

Everything inside there is live rock, plus live sand. I pulled a few gallons from my previous 200 gallon tank to “seed” it.

Ooh my bad, I thought it looked like dry rock. I just figured diversifying bacteria and micro fauna might be your issue.
