Hi guys, does anyone know what these shiny green bubbles are? They are fairly hard.

Green bubble algae

User Avatar @Dan383 244d

Thanks both, is it harmless or do I need to do anything?

User Avatar @billy 244d

It is harmless but can grow out of control if not removed. Emerald crabs and foxface rabbit fish are great at eating bubble algae

Thanks Billy, I guess the foxface will be a more suitable option for a reef setup?

Yeah those are definitely bubble algae. I got some popping up in my tank too and they seem kind of tough to get rid of once they start. Some people say not to pop them since it can spread spores or whatever. I tried picking them out with tweezers but they just keep coming back. Have you noticed if your cleanup crew touches them at all? Heard emerald crabs sometimes eat bubble algae but I’m a bit nervous to add one. Love the colors in your tank by the way. That red stuff in the background is sweet. Do you notice it growing faster since the bubbles showed up? Still figuring out what works

Thanks, I would be nervous adding emerald crabs as they are with caution for a reef tank. The red algae I assumed was coralline but can’t be sure, I’ve got a mix of red and pink starting on the back of the tank after a year. I think I’ll carefully try the tweezer option and see how it goes.

So looking at my tank last night, I noticed a snail with five little bubble algae bubbles. I scooped him out of the tank, popped those bubbles, rinsed him off, scrubbed his shell with salt water, putting him back in the tank. No harm no foul.
