So I followed the rule of 1/2 cup per gallon in my 30 gallon barrel to do a water change and let it mix overnight, now I suck at math but assumably that would be 15 cups total wouldn’t it? woke up to it being at a salinity of 1.035, what did I do wrong when mixing my reef crystals?

you didnt check you you salinity after you were done mixing
It is possible that some water evaporated if you didn't keep a lid on it. Just add some more RO water and you'll be okay but it really doesn't take much to make it swing so add a little at a time and retest
Salt can be compacted or absorb water from the air during storage and in general the density is not guaranteed. That's why you always use a refractometer to check it. I weigh out the amount of salt I need on a scale for my mixing bucket and it's much more accurate than volume measurements, though even then the weight can be off due to water absorption from the air, so I ALWAYS check with a refractometer after letting it sit.
Its a 30 gallon barrel if its filled to the top. You look like 5 gallons short which would account for the extra high salinity if you put in 15 cups instead of like 12.5 or something. My thinking anyways

I usually add a bit less than I think. Then test with a refractometer a few min later. Then repeat that until it’s where I want. Then let mix over night. Test again with refractometer and make minor adjustment if needed.
