Hello reefers. This is my first tank and I seem to be having a problem with hair algae or Dino’s. Does anyone have suggestions?

Correr nitratos en cero casi siempre genera dinos. Si apagas las luces y los dinos parecen irse de la arena, y regresan cuando las luces se encienden de nuevo, eso indica que definitivamente son dinos. Puedes dosificar nitrato de sodio o nitrato de potasio, pero te recomiendo que consigas peces y alimentes más. Pero también tendrás que asegurarte de estar subiendo tus niveles de fosfato al mismo tiempo. También puedes hacer un apagón de 2-3 días pero eso va a molestar al resto del acuario.
Running nitrates at zero leads to dinos nearly every time. If you turn your lights off and the dinos appear to leave the sand bed, and come back when the lights turn back on that indicates it’s definitely dinos. You can dose sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate, but I’d recommend getting fish and feeding heavier. But you’ll also have to make sure you are raising your phosphate levels at the same time. You can do a black out for 2-3 days as well but this will piss of the rest of the tank.

Sí, yo dejaría el skimmer apagado y por mucho tiempo también. Limpia los compuestos orgánicos disueltos del agua y eso es lo que las bacterias nitrifican convirtiéndolo en nitratos beneficiosos. Tengo un acuario de 10 galones desde marzo que lleva 6 meses sin skimmer y está yendo bien sin haber tenido nunca dinos. Manejo mi acuario bastante sucio, apuntando a mantener los nitratos arriba de 10 y fosfatos en .1 ppm. Esto previene la mayoría de las cosas feas del hobby.
Yes, I would leave the skimmer off and for a long time too. It cleans the dissolved organic compounds from the water and that’s what bacteria nitrify into beneficial nitrates. I have a 6 month 10 gallon tank since March I haven’t run a skimmer in and it’s doing well having never dealt with dino. I run my tank pretty dirty, aiming to keep nitrates above 10 and phosphates at .1 ppm. This will prevent most of the uglies in the hobby.

Es un poco raro que tus nitratos estén en 0. Podrías intentar dosicar nitratos para mantenerlos entre 5-15 ppm y los copépodos acabarán con los dinos.
It’s a bit odd for your nitrates to be at 0. You could try dosing nitrates to get them between 5-15 ppm and copepods will wipe out dinos.

Apagar el skimmer hasta que suban los nitratos es excelente consejo. También agregar copépodos ayuda a luchar contra los Dinos y mejora la diversidad general del acuario
Skimmer off until nitrates is great advice. Also adding copepods helps fight Dino’s and improves overall tank diversity

Yo también estoy pasando por esta fase y quiero enfatizar la paciencia y hacer cambios pequeños a la vez. Terminé agregando un poco más de equipo limpiador y dejé que la fase fea fuera un rito de paso. Agregué copépodos para la diversidad y mantuve cambios de agua regulares. Las algas significan que tienes un buen ambiente para el crecimiento de corales y quieres inclinar el balance hacia los corales teniendo un buen equipo limpiador y controlando cuánto alimentas. Mantuve mi skimmer encendido y alimenté un poco más pesado porque me encanta ver a mis peces comer lol Después de revisar tu acuario definitivamente consigue equipo limpiador, caracoles y cangrejos ermitaños. Veo que solo tienes camarones de menta.
I am continuing to go through this phase as well and want to emphasize patience and making small changes at a time. I ended up adding bit more cleaner crew and let ugly phase be rite of passage. Added copepod for diversity and kept up with water changes. Algae means you have good environment for coral growth and you want to tip the balance to coral by having good cleanup crew and controlling amount you feed. I kept my protein skimmer going and fed bit more heavier since I love seeing my fishes eat lol After reviewing your tank def get cleanup crew, snails and hermit crabs. I see that you only have peppermint shrimp.
