Description

The Engineer Goby, also known as the Convict Blenny, is a unique and fascinating saltwater fish. Despite its common name, it is not a true goby but belongs to the family Pholidichthyidae. It is known for its striking juvenile color pattern and its interesting burrowing behavior. As adults, these fish have a long, eel-like body with a pattern of horizontal black and white stripes.

Reef Safe?

Yes, but with caution. They will not harm corals or invertebrates but their burrowing behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially topple rock structures.

Environment

Engineer Gobies prefer a tank with a deep sand bed and plenty of hiding places. They need good water quality and a stable environment. The tank should be well-covered as these fish are known to jump.

Behavior

Engineer Gobies are known for their burrowing behavior. They will often dig tunnels and caves in the substrate, which they use for hiding and protection. They are generally peaceful towards other fish but can be territorial with their own kind.

Cool fish, they like a lot of sand so build a thick sand bed. They like to engineer there house as in the name! They kinda look like eels which is amazing. Likes to come out of his cave when I’m feeding. Overall great unique fish. 😁😁

Good fish if you are looking for an eel alternative. Mine would typically stay under my rock structure coming out only to eat and swim to another rock but would sometimes randomly get in a mood where it would swim in the open. Don’t get one if you are particularly with the way you want your sand because they will move it how they like. Definitely wouldn’t recommend if you have corals in the sand bed. They can get pretty big as mine was around 8in so keep that in mind. Never actually saw it bother any other fish or shrimp but have a feeling it ate my firefish but also have no proof.
