Description
Coral Banded Shrimp: Striking Beauty with Cleaning Services
Coral Banded Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) are among the most visually stunning invertebrates available for reef aquariums. With their bold red and white banded bodies, long white antennae, and oversized claws, these eye-catching shrimp create a dramatic focal point while providing natural cleaning services. Their striking appearance and interesting behavior make them popular additions to reef displays.
Why Coral Banded Shrimp?
Spectacular red and white banded coloration with long, elegant antennae
Natural cleaner that may pick parasites and dead tissue from fish
Establishes cleaning stations where fish visit for grooming
Generally reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates
Hardy and long-lived with proper care
Fascinating to observe as they wave antennae to attract fish
Care Requirements:
Temperature: 72-78°F
Salinity: 1.023-1.025
pH: 8.1-8.4
Provide caves, overhangs, or rockwork for shelter and territory
Feed meaty foods 2-3 times per week (mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, pellets)
Moderate water flow
Stable iodine levels support healthy molting
IMPORTANT Behavioral Notes: Coral Banded Shrimp can be territorial and aggressive toward other shrimp species, including other Coral Banded Shrimp (unless kept as a mated pair). They may prey on small ornamental shrimp, small fish, or slow-moving invertebrates. Best kept as a single specimen or mated pair in community reef tanks. They are generally safe with larger fish and corals.
Compatibility: Avoid keeping with Cleaner Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, or other small shrimp species. Not recommended for tanks with small gobies, blennies, or ornamental shrimp like Sexy Shrimp.
Additional Notes: Coral Banded Shrimp are sensitive to copper-based medications and sudden water parameter changes. Acclimate slowly using the drip method. They will molt periodically - this is normal and the shed exoskeleton should be left in the tank.
Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons.
Each Coral Banded Shrimp is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, vibrantly colored specimen ready to add stunning beauty and cleaning services to your reef aquarium.
