Description
Balanophyllia is a genus of small, solitary, non-reef building corals often found in deeper waters. These corals are known for their cup-like shape and are part of the Dendrophylliidae family. They do not have symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) like many other corals, which means they do not rely on photosynthesis for nutrition. Instead, they capture plankton and small particles from the water. Balanophyllia species are often found in temperate and tropical seas, and they can thrive in environments with lower light and water flow conditions.
