Description

The Longnose Hawkfish is a striking, small, and colorful saltwater fish known for its elongated snout and vibrant red body covered with white horizontal stripes. It is a popular choice among aquarists due to its hardiness and unique appearance.

Reef Safe?

The Longnose Hawkfish is considered reef safe with caution. It will not harm corals, but it may eat small shrimp and other invertebrates.

Environment

This fish prefers a well-lit aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and perches, such as live rock or coral branches. It does not require a sand substrate as it does not burrow or sift. It is capable of adapting to a range of water conditions, making it a hardy choice for beginner aquarists.

Behavior

The Longnose Hawkfish is a solitary species, often found perched on coral branches where it waits for prey. It is not a strong swimmer and prefers to hop from perch to perch. It can be territorial, especially towards other hawkfish.

What You Feed: Prefers mysis shrimp, but takes pellets too

Really cool dude with awesome pattern. Will swim from spot to spot around the tank, perching on flat surfaces. Has a few favorite spots higher up in the tank that he alternates between. During feeding time will actively swim around and take food off the surface. Have not had any issues with outward aggression but can be defensive if disturbed. Listed as medium difficulty because they can be picky eaters and require a compatible tank setup with some areas of low flow to perch, but for an aquarist with some experience can be very rewarding. Mine has never attempted going after my inverts (dwarf hermits and skunk cleaners), but he would probably try to eat smaller ones like sexy shrimp. Pros: unique pattern unlike anything else in the hobby, lots of personality Cons: may pick on small inverts, can be fussy eaters, requires correct tank setup Availability: fairly difficult to find

What You Feed: Live brine shrimp, frozen brine nori mysis etc.

I named my longnose hawkfish Q-Burt. He is full of character! He loves to hang out by my firework polyps and my zoanthids. He uses them as a perch lol. Overall an amazing fish! Gets along great with his tank mates and is definitely fun to mess around when mesmerizing your tank.
