Before and after substrate swap: crushed coral –> live sand!
My boyfriend and I set up this tank with unrinsed crushed coral based on some bad advice from a LFS owner who happened to be out of live sand that day. Turns out detritus builds up FAST and any disturbance creates a thick white cloud, even after siphoning it each water change. We were also bummed to realize we couldn't get a sandsifter.
Five months and lot of R2R threads later, we decided to swap it all at once without taking fish or coral out. It was honestly very stressful, especially because we couldn't account for all the fish for a few hours until the dust settled. Everyone made it out unscathed though, and we're super happy with the results.

Quick update. Finally moved all the frags lol.¹
Spent most of the afternoon transferring coral back into the big tank. Glad to have things getting back to normal!
Moving day went well. From 14 to 47 gallons. Had it up and running with some new and old rock and did a fishless cycle for about 2 weeks first. Everything looks so much smaller now. Definitely be hitting up my guy at Dave’s Corals in Lincoln,RI In the coming weeks
Almost done! Gotta move the sumo a bit back to fit in the middle door. So far, so good!
By to this 40 g breeder one year in and upgrade to 90g coming this week end 😬😬😬😬…wish me luck .
Transferring a 2.6g pico into a 20g nano!
New tank setup and first fish added from old tank 2 wide bar clownfish
The small fry is moving to the bigger tank for a more stable environment 😁
Swapped my 55g into a new 65g tank....hopefully the coralline will be back soon!
5 months in and the birdsnest has exploded. Getting them ready to move from the 15 aio to the drilled 75. Excited to give it some major expansion room.
Converted my 125 freshwater to saltwater! Everything seems to be doing super well. My urchin decided to pick up one of my little gsp frag and has been running around with it. I was gonna take it off but it looks too funny and the gsp don’t seem to mind 🤣🤣
