Description

A small, brilliantly colored planktivorous anthias: males show a magenta-violet body with a bold yellow dorsal stripe running through the upper lobe of the deeply forked tail, while females are lavender with a yellow back and caudal fin. Peaceful and fully reef safe, it swims in the open midwater but needs overhangs and rockwork to retreat into, and does best as a harem of one male with several females in a mature 70+ gallon tank with strong flow. Like all anthias it has a fast metabolism and must be fed small meaty/zooplankton foods 2-3 times daily; it is also a notorious jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

Environment

Requires stable saltwater conditions, strong filtration, moderate to strong water movement, plenty of open swimming space, and rockwork for shelter. Best kept in well-oxygenated reef aquariums with a temperature around 72-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025.

Behavior

Active open-water swimmer that often does well singly or in groups with one male and several females. It can be territorial toward other anthias, especially in smaller tanks.
