Description
The Southern Puffer, also known as the Sphoeroides nephelus, is a saltwater fish that is known for its ability to inflate its body when threatened. The body is mostly greyish with a white belly, and it has small, prickly spines that cover its skin. This fish is found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
Reef Safe
No, Southern Puffers are not considered reef safe as they can damage coral and other invertebrates.
Environment
Southern Puffers prefer a tank with plenty of hiding places and a sandy substrate where they can burrow. They require a well-filtered aquarium as they produce a lot of waste. They are a tropical species, so the water temperature should be kept between 72-78°F.
Behavior
Southern Puffers are generally solitary creatures and can be aggressive towards other fish, especially those of the same species. They are slow swimmers but are capable of quick bursts of speed when needed. They are also known to be quite curious and will often explore their surroundings.
