Start with Your Tank Size and Algae Type

Cleanup crews should match your tank footprint, nutrient level, and algae pressure. Small tanks can be overstocked quickly.

Core Cleanup Crew for 20-40 Gallons

  • Snails (mixed): film and rock algae control
  • A small number of hermits if desired
  • Optional: one conch for sandbed in larger nanos

Stock Slowly, Then Rebalance

Add cleaners in phases and watch food availability. Starving cleanup crews decline fast.

  • Week 1: starter snail group
  • Week 2-3: add a few more if algae persists
  • Avoid “cleanup crew packages” that overstock

Compatibility Tips

  • Choose reef-safe species only
  • Provide spare shells if keeping hermits
  • Feed lightly if algae drops too low
