Week 1: Build a Stable Foundation
Choose tank size, rock, sand, and reliable equipment before buying livestock. Stability beats speed in reefing.
- Use RO/DI water and quality salt mix
- Target salinity 1.025, temp 77-79F
- Run return pump, heater, and flow 24/7
Week 2: Cycle and Test
Cycle the tank fully before adding fish or coral. Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate every few days.
- Ammonia: 0 ppm before stocking
- Nitrite: 0 ppm before stocking
- Nitrate: keep under control with water changes
Week 3: First Cleanup Crew
Add a small, appropriate cleanup crew once cycle is complete. Start light and observe.
Browse options in the ReefBay shop and track additions in the ReefBay app.
Week 4: First Fish and Easy Coral
Add one hardy fish and one beginner coral, then wait and monitor for 1-2 weeks.
- Feed lightly
- Test weekly: salinity, alkalinity, nitrate, phosphate
- Avoid adding multiple animals at once
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Stocking too fast
- Using tap water
- Chasing every parameter daily
Consistency wins. Keep a routine and log all tests and maintenance.
