Nope you don't need to if you do it right. Once you have balance you can add it all except a few species that need an established tank. I started growing coraline algae only a month and half after starting it. Started with dry dead liverock, live sand and cycled water from the store. The dead live rock provided the ammonia to kick start the cycle and added some Fritz Turbostart 900. 3 weeks later tank was cycled.
