Guys does anyone know why suddenly I have 0.5mg/l of Nitrite in the water column?? Almost like the nitrifying bacteria has stalled somewhere along the line.
I’ve never had nitrite until recently (with the exception of cycling). I’m at a loss….the only recent changes have been three new frags (leather and gorgania)

In my experience a nitrite spike comes after an ammonia spike. Sorry if I’m repeating what you already know by saying this but the nitrite you’re seeing now was ammonia that has now been nitrified by your bacteria. Next, your nitrates will probably spike as the bacteria further degrades the nitrites. The reason for the ammonia spike could be tons of things; as MaxB said, something dying or overfeeding are the most common causes. With that said, a transient spike in nitrite is not an emergency, especially at that level. You can do a water change if it’ll put you at ease but if your ammonia is zero I’d just ride it out.
Thank you, ammonia is 0 currently so would assume as you’ve said the ammonia spike has already happened. I’ll ride it out unless anything changes/worsens and look out for the nitrate spike!

Try testing again, and do a water change. Perhaps something died and you can’t see it, or there’s not enough livestock to eat what you are feeding.
I know nothing has died, all stock is accounted for. Perhaps I’m overfeeding, that’s a real possibility.
