How Often Should I Replace Activated Carbon in a Reef Tank?

Quick Answer

Most reef tanks do best replacing activated carbon every 2-4 weeks, depending on bioload, feeding, and water clarity goals.

For most systems, replace activated carbon every 2-4 weeks.

  • High bioload or heavy feeding: every 2 weeks
  • Moderate mixed reef: every 3-4 weeks
  • If water yellows or odors increase, change sooner

Rinse new carbon before use and run moderate flow through the media. Too much carbon changed at once can shock sensitive corals, so avoid oversized batches. You can compare carbon media and reactors in the ReefBay Shop.
