Temperament
Description
A small sharpnose puffer (toby) with a dark brown to blue-gray body densely covered in white to pale-blue spots and a contrasting orange-tinted tail. It is bold and constantly active, picking at rock and decor, and can become territorial or nippy toward slow, long-finned tankmates in tight quarters. Best in a mature 30+ gallon fish-only or FOWLR system with plenty of rockwork, hard-shelled foods to wear down its beak, and pristine water, it will sample ornamental shrimp, snails, worms, and coral polyps.
Reef Safe
No
Environment
Requires stable saltwater conditions, good filtration, moderate water flow, and plenty of rockwork for hiding and exploration. Typical reef temperatures around 72-78 F, salinity 1.020-1.025, and a secure lid are recommended.
Behavior
Active, inquisitive, and constantly exploring rockwork. It may nip at sessile invertebrates and occasionally bother slow-moving tankmates. Best kept with other fish that can tolerate a bold personality.
