Description
A deep-bodied pygmy angelfish patterned with roughly eight alternating black and white vertical bars, a yellow belly, and a speckled pale tail; juveniles carry a blue ocellus on the rear dorsal fin that fades with age. It is one of the more docile dwarf angels, shy and cryptic at first, so it needs a mature, peaceful tank with abundant caves, overhangs, and live rock rather than open, brightly lit rockscapes. Wild-caught fish come from 60-200 ft and are notoriously difficult to feed and acclimate, so aquacultured specimens already eating pellets are strongly preferred; it may nip clam mantles and fleshy LPS/SPS in a reef.
Reef Safe
With caution
Environment
Requires a mature, stable saltwater aquarium with excellent water quality, abundant live rock, caves, and shaded hiding places. Prefers low-stress surroundings and stable reef conditions.
Behavior
Shy and secretive, especially when first introduced. It spends much of its time weaving through rockwork and may become more confident over time in a peaceful environment.
