Description
A small, showy sand-associated wrasse: females and juveniles are whitish-green covered in irregular black leopard spots, while terminal males turn orange-red with green-blue scale spots and banded heads. Peaceful and non-aggressive toward tankmates, it is fully coral-safe but will hunt tiny ornamental shrimp and small snails, and it needs a mature reef with abundant live rock micro-fauna plus at least 3 inches of fine sand to bury in at night. Notoriously difficult to establish, buy only well-acclimated, visibly feeding specimens, quarantine carefully, offer multiple small feedings daily, and use a tight-fitting lid.

The Meleagris Leopard Wrasse needs a well-established tank with plenty of hiding spots and swimming space. It prefers a sandy substrate where it can bury itself at night. The tank should also have a secure lid as this fish is known to jump.
Behavior
This species is known for its active and playful behavior. It is a fast swimmer and needs plenty of open space to swim. During the day, it is often seen hunting for food. At night, it buries itself in the sand for protection.
