Description
The Messmate Pipefish is a fascinating saltwater fish, known for its long, slender body and distinctive, snout-like mouth. It has a unique pattern of brown and white stripes, which provide excellent camouflage among seagrass and coral reefs. This species is nocturnal, preferring to hunt and feed during the night.
Reef Safe?
Yes, the Messmate Pipefish is considered reef safe, but care should be taken as they can prey on small invertebrates.
Environment
These pipefish thrive in a well-established tank with plenty of hiding places and a gentle current. They prefer a sandy substrate and require plenty of live rock or plants for camouflage and shelter. A tightly fitting lid is also necessary, as these fish are known jumpers.
Behavior
Messmate Pipefish are generally peaceful and solitary fish. They are slow swimmers and prefer to hover in one place, using their snouts to pick off food. They can be somewhat shy and will often hide among plants and rocks.
