How to manage diatoms and algae with conch tuxedo urchin and turbo sna

Conch wave ! Making light work of the diatoms , currently in the ugly phase. Any other recommendations for CUC to add or leave as they are ? Been in a week and a lot of algae build up on the rock work. I have a tuxedo urchin and 3 turbo snails also, but don’t want to overstock (80 litres)

Turbo snails are big for that size of a tank. Three of them would take care of all of your algae issues I would think. But I would worry that they would starve eventually. Be careful not to let your urchin starve too. It will clean your rockscape very rapidly. You will probably want to feed it a small algae wafer once a week. You can just drop it right onto the urchin’s spines. Trochus snails are fantastic cleanup crew members. They can flip themselves back over if they wind up on their backs so you don’t have to worry about making sure that their right side up all the time they will also reproduce for you but not too quickly. And they annihilate all of the gunk on the rocks and the glass. They move pretty quickly actually. I also really like cerith snails to help keep the sandbed clean and aerated. They’ll bury themselves down in there and come up for food. They eat just about everything and clean just about every part of the tank.

Thanks for the detailed response, if they get through all the algae I’ll re home 2 turbos and supplement feed the urchin. Ceriths seem appealing if they catch un eaten food on the sand bed too that’s cool

Add CUC slowly, ugly phase sucks!

It does but I’m relieved to see it, visual progression albeit not nice to look at lol

Just watch it for a few weeks and maybe hermit crabs, but the tricolor one that only gets to max 2 cm, and maybe a few trochus. Otherwise I’d leave it at that. A few nassarius are also handy—every animal has a different role. The nassarius stirs up the substrate, the hermit crabs take spots with algae that the snails can’t reach, or an emerald crab is also a good option. But with any addition you make, I’d personally wait 3 weeks and then decide if you need more.
