Fighting another bout of Cyano, not as bad as the first one few weeks ago but still frustrated it came back. This round I’m adding a protein skimmer this week and also starting to question upgrading my wavemaker. I seem to be getting some dead spots despite changing the wavemaker positions so not sure if I need something stronger? I have a 1500gph Hygger DC, and considering upgrading to an AI Nero 3, which is what I initially wanted but hesitated bc of price. Any thoughts?

Is your main pump variable speed?

Yep it is

Maybe try a splitter on the tank output or they make ones that constantly rotate also. Much cheaper to try than a new WM

Awesome thanks! I’ll check into that!

And turn the pump up a little

I don’t think a skimmer is a solution for cyano. Your nitrates and phosphates look perfect right now. A skimmer will send both those numbers to 0. And cyano will thrive with 0 nitrates. The dead spots of flow is more likely your issue. Having alternating wave makers or more randomness to them is your best option.

Thanks! Oh yeah I don’t want to make my nitrates lower, I’m already dosing NeoNitro to get them at least to 5. Without they’ve been getting down to 2. I might hang on to the skimmer just to have an option for providing oxygen if I have to dose Chemiclean as last resort. I’ve been trying to avoid treating if I can. Would a gyre style maybe be a better option than a traditional wavemaker?
