Description
A striking rabbitfish with a bright yellow body, black-and-white barred head with a foxlike elongated snout, and a distinctive dark blotch on the upper flank that varies from a neat circle to an irregular smudge between individuals. Peaceful toward unrelated tankmates and largely left alone by aggressors thanks to its venomous dorsal and anal spines, but it will not tolerate other rabbitfish or foxfaces in the same tank once mature. Needs open swimming room plus rockwork to shelter in, a steady supply of algae-based food to curb coral nipping, and careful handling, herd it into a container rather than netting it, and it may temporarily blotch or darken when stressed.
Reef Safe
With caution
Environment
Requires a stable saltwater aquarium with excellent water quality, ample live rock for grazing and shelter, open swimming space, and secure aquascaping. Best kept in tropical marine conditions with temperatures around 72-78 F, pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity 1.023-1.025.
Behavior
Active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time grazing on algae. Usually peaceful but can become territorial toward similar-shaped fish or other rabbitfish. May wedge itself into rockwork when stressed or sleeping.
