Helfrichi Goby Care Guide: Tank Size, Diet & Jump Risk

Learn Helfrichi Goby (Nemateleotris helfrichi) care: 20–30+ gallon quiet reef setup, zooplankton diet, bonded pairs, jump-proof lids, peaceful tankmates, and a ReefBay buying checklist for Helfrich's Firefish.

The Helfrichi Goby (Nemateleotris helfrichi), better known in the hobby as Helfrich's Firefish or Helfrich's Dartfish, is one of the most striking midwater fish you can add to a reef. It hovers above the rock with a lavender-to-violet body, a bright yellow face, and a tall first dorsal fin that flicks like a semaphore while it picks zooplankton from the current.

It stays small, ignores corals and ornamental invertebrates, and is peaceful with most tankmates. Success comes down to three things: a quiet tank with a real bolt hole, frequent small meaty feedings, and a lid that leaves no gap β€” because this fish jumps. This guide covers tank size, diet, pairs, tankmates, and a buying checklist before you shop the ReefBay marketplace.

Quick care snapshot

  • Scientific name: Nemateleotris helfrichi
  • Also called: Helfrich's Firefish, Helfrich's Dartfish, Helfrichi Firefish Goby, Hi Fin Red Banded Goby
  • Family: Microdesmidae (dartfishes / firefishes)
  • Origin: Central and Western Pacific (deep rubble slopes)
  • Max size: about 2.5 inches
  • Care level: moderate β€” shy, jump-prone, needs steady small feedings
  • Temperament: peaceful; may spar with other firefish or similar dartfish unless kept as a bonded pair
  • Reef-safe: yes. Safe with corals, clams, and ornamental shrimp (avoid large predatory shrimp)
  • Minimum tank: 20 gallons; 30+ gallons is more comfortable for a pair
  • Diet: carnivore. Zooplankton, mysis, enriched brine, fine pellets
  • Social: solitary or a confirmed bonded pair
  • Jump risk: high β€” tight-fitting lid required

Tank size and setup

ReefBay lists a 20-gallon minimum for this species. That works for a single fish in a calm nano or small reef, but a pair does better in 30 gallons or more with clear open water to hover and multiple caves to claim. This is a deep-water dartfish in nature, so think "quiet midwater perch with a panic room," not a busy, competitive community.

  • Bolt holes first. Stack live rock so there is at least one tight cave or overhang the fish can vanish into when startled
  • Leave open midwater. Helfrichi spends most of the day hovering just above the rock, not parked on the sand
  • Moderate flow. Enough current to bring food past its station without blasting it off the perch
  • Dimmer zones help. Under bright reef lights, shaded rock and overhangs reduce stress for this deeper-water species
  • Seal every gap. Mesh screen lids, foam around overflows, and closed cable holes matter more than almost any other equipment choice

Water parameters

Helfrichi is not fussy about a special chemistry recipe, but it is sensitive to sudden swings and dirty water. Aim for stable reef parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–78Β°F (22–26Β°C). Many keepers prefer the cooler side of typical reef temps
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 7–11 dKH, kept steady
  • Ammonia and nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: low (about 2–15 ppm)

Acclimate slowly β€” drip acclimation over an hour or more is safer than a quick float. New to testing? Our reef tank water parameters guide for beginners covers what to measure and how often. Log results in the ReefBay app so you catch drift before a shy fish stops eating.

Diet and feeding

In the wild, Nemateleotris helfrichi picks tiny crustaceans and other zooplankton from the water column. In the aquarium it usually takes frozen foods readily once it settles, but it is a slow, deliberate eater. Fast, aggressive feeders will outcompete it without ever chasing it.

  • Staples: thawed mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods / cyclops, and other fine frozen meaty foods
  • Pellets: high-quality marine micro-pellets once it learns them; start small and feed in midwater
  • Frequency: two to three small feedings a day while it is settling; you can ease back once it is plump and confident
  • Target feeding helps. A pipette or feeding tube near its hover spot keeps food in reach before wrasses and anthias clear the column

Watch the belly and the dorsal fin. A healthy Helfrichi looks rounded and flicks its sail often. A pinched profile or constant hiding usually means it is not getting enough food or feels bullied.

Behavior, pairs, and tankmates

Helfrichi is shy and peaceful. It claims a hover station near a cave, darts in when startled, then eases back out to feed. Two unpaired adults can fight over that territory, so keep one fish or a known bonded pair β€” never drop in a second adult and hope they sort it out in a small tank.

  • Good tankmates: clownfish, cardinalfish, peaceful gobies, smaller anthias in larger systems, and other calm midwater fish that leave it alone at feeding time
  • Caution: six line wrasses, assertive fairy wrasses, damsels, and dottybacks can stress or outcompete a firefish. Our Firefish Goby care guide covers the same jump-risk and tankmate patterns for the more common Nemateleotris magnifica
  • Avoid: large hawkfish, triggers, aggressive shrimp (such as banded coral shrimp), and anything big enough to eat a 2.5-inch dartfish
  • Corals and inverts: completely reef-safe with SPS, LPS, soft corals, and most ornamental shrimp and snails

Jump risk β€” the mistake that ends most Helfrichi stories

Like other firefish, Helfrichi launches straight up when frightened. Nighttime spooking, a sudden light, or netting nearby is enough. Before the fish goes in:

  1. Install a tight canopy or fine mesh screen lid
  2. Close cable pass-throughs and overflow gaps
  3. Dim lights during the first days so it can map its cave without panic flights
  4. Quarantine when you can β€” a covered QT box is safer than an open display during the stress of shipping

Our 30-day saltwater fish quarantine protocol is a good template, and many keepers keep the QT covered the entire time for dartfish.

Common problems and quick fixes

  • Hiding all day after week one: check for bullies and competitive feeders; target-feed near the cave
  • Losing weight: increase feeding frequency and use finer foods; pause adding other planktivores
  • Faded color: enrich frozen foods and keep light/stress lower; color often returns with condition
  • Found on the floor: jump escape β€” seal the lid before the next fish arrives
  • Fighting with a second firefish: separate unless they arrived as a bonded pair; do not mix Helfrichi with Firefish or Purple Firefish in a small tank

Buying checklist before you click purchase

  1. Confirm the lid is escape-proof before the fish ships
  2. Have a cave and open hover space ready in a calm 20+ gallon reef (30+ for a pair)
  3. Look for clear eyes, intact fins, a rounded belly, and a fish that is already eating
  4. Ask whether it is a single or a bonded pair β€” do not buy two random adults for a nano
  5. Stock live or frozen fine foods (mysis, brine, pods) before arrival
  6. Plan quarantine in a covered box when possible
  7. Skip aggressive tankmates until the Helfrichi is eating confidently in the display
