Hi there and welcome I use charcoal and filter socks and a skimmer on my Red Sea reefer 250 it is a heavy filtration system but I do not do water changes that often. So let me know what you think and it all depends on you and your liking.
I have the skimmer in the first chamber, filter sponge thing in the second and heater and pump in the third
what skimmer do you recommend? i know fluval makes one that fits but ive heard it’s not the best
Im using the one Fluval made for it, it seems to work but it also came with a bubble mangus something but have not tried that one yet.
I took out the sponge and put a heater and macro algae and made a small refugium and put filter floss and bio media in the first chamber

You dont have to put anything in there if you dont wanna. Some people have skimmers, others use carbon or chemipure or something. I didnt really use anything. I had filter floss to catch debris in the first chamber, heater in the second and thats it. I like the idea of simplicity but everyones different. Pic of mine when it was pretty loaded with coral. No issues with phosphates or nitrates.
